In 2019, the latest statistics state that 1,420,510 children in Canada are living in poverty.* Our governments at all levels have taken important steps forward, but in light of this reality, much remains to be done.
"Bread not Stones" is a critical United Church of Canada initiative to raise awareness and advocate with all levels of government to eradicate child poverty in Canada. This project, created for all members and adherents of the church, is led by Region 7 Division of Social Justice and supported by numerous Mission and Outreach Committees.
The name is taken from Matthew 7:9:
"If a child asks for bread, who among us would give that child a stone?"
Children living in poverty and their families deserve:
♥ Affordable housing
♥ Food security
♥ Affordable child care
♥ A living wage
♥ An effective national strategy

Meet "Dollie". She’s a symbol - a very powerful one - made of many mismatched scraps and an old, ragged sweater. "Dolls of Hope", the brilliant idea of Carolyn Pogue in Alberta, represent every child living in poverty in Canada. They are presented to politicians and others of influence, who create policy and direct funding. Have a look at this amazing video, created by Bill Butt of London, ON. We believe that child poverty in our country can and must be eliminated. Let us hear from you at: wecanendchildpoverty@gmail.com.
