In Canada, in 2019, there are 1,420,510 children living
in poverty.*  This statistic includes 37.9% of First Nations children living on reserve*-totally unacceptable in our rich country. We must raise awareness and promote action at all levels of government for the well-being of these, our most vulnerable children. Our federal government has proposed an extensive platform to help Canadian children and their families living in poverty.

We wish to acknowledge the following concrete measures implemented by our federal government.  We encourage our governments at all levels to continue to take action. Call, email, write or meet with your local, provincial and federal representatives. Ask them to make the needs of our children in poverty their top priority.

Our November 21, 2017 Bread Not Stones Event on Parliament Hill was a great  success!  *Read the article below and click on the photos to enlarge them.

Twelve United Church of Canada delegates from Ontario, Alberta and Nova Scotia were hosted by Senator Art Eggleton and the All-Party Anti-Poverty Caucus at a very successful Breakfast and Panel Discussion, in recognition of the UN's Universal Children's Day. Meetings were held with Parliamentary Secretary Adam Vaughan, Families, Children and Social Development and a representative from Indigenous Services. MPs Kate Young and Irene Mathyssen delivered powerful statements in the House of Commons about the work of Bread not Stones and our event partners, Citizens for Public Justice and Campaign 2000. 360 Dolls of Hope from across Canada were distributed to every MP and a number of Senators. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a special video, also recognized our vital work. To cap off this memorable day, MP Kate Young arranged a photo on Parliament Hill, with MPs from all parties and their dolls. We are ever grateful to the dedicated United Church women, men and children across our country who create our beloved Dolls of Hope. These dolls touch hearts and speak volumes for our 1,420,510 children living in poverty.
